Dead mobo/processor?

Post by 117 »

So i've been given a mate's PC to take a look at. Other morning he went to power on and nothing happened, just the HDD light flashed but nothing happened. He left it, tried it again next day and nothing at all this time, no power whatsoever.

I get it home, swap out the PSU with a brand new spare one I had, same thing happens, just the HDD light flashes, fan spins, but nothing, no noise of HDD spin, no POST noise, nothing displayed onscreen (doesn't even start BIOS) - methinks a fried mobo or processor....

edit: forgot to mention, he mentioned problems with the Cd/DVD drives running slow recently so I disconnected them and got the same result. I also took out his HDD and put it in my machine and it recognises it fine

A few months ago, i mis-diagnosed my dad's failed PC due to being a mobo problem. You'd press the power button, the power light would come on, and nothing else would happen. Due to me being lazy and not being bothered to test every component, i just told him the mobo was fried. Turns out it in fact wasn't. It was just the hard drive being rather crazy with a power problem causing the PC to not boot at all. A quick replacement of the hard drive and it all worked fine. My dad did however buy a new mobo before i figured out the real problem, so i have a fully functioning mobo in my drawer, and a dodgy HDD awaiting repair.
But, that doesn't really help you, because you said you'd taken the HDD out. I agree and say it's a mobo/CPU problem.

hmmm, just had an idea thanks to Mixy's post, I had ignored the second HDD in the machine - it's the original HDD that came with the PC, he started getting drive errors about a year ago so we set him up a new drive and backed everything up to it, but he insisted on keeping the drive connected in case he needed it - I didn't try disconnecting that bastid last night, so that's a job for tonight now
