Windows Vista (Previously Longhorn) First Beta Available Now

Post by 117 »

Microsoft has released the first beta of its next Windows client, formerly codenamed Longhorn but now named Vista. The release, aimed primarily at developers, is designed to improve security, deployment, manageability and performance.

Beta 1 of Windows Vista gives IT staff an opportunity to test the operating system and provide Microsoft with feedback. It is being delivered to more than 10,000 testers via the Windows Vista Technical Beta Programme, and will also be available through the MSDN developer programme and Microsoft TechNet.

The beta ships with Internet Explorer 7, which includes features to guard against spoofing and phishing attacks. Other security features include Windows Service Hardening, which monitors for abnormal activity in the file system and registry; full-volume disk encryption; and support for Trusted Platform Module (TPM) security chips. The firewall in Windows Vista has been upgraded to filter outgoing as well as incoming traffic.

I should point out that the beta is only available to MSDN subscribers, which is a (highly expensive it would seem) pay service

the driver support would be crumby as well so useless for gamers etc as the graphics card drivers would be non existenet i would imagine. still would be nice to stick it on a spare pc to have a squizz at it

been reading about how microsft have been telling web site developers how to specifically code to allow IE7 to function properly, all sounds a bit suss to me.

been using Opera now and then recently, mainly to make sure my site displayed correctly. have to say it's the fastest browsers I've used so far -

shame it costs ?22 to use without the adds or i would probably start using it full time.
