Need help with my internet browser

Post by shaggyhog »

I know I must sound like an :arse: for asking, but whilst I have been on the internet for years what currently irks me is the variation in page display between the browsers I use...

I use MSN explorer 90% of the time. The page layout is perfect, graphics and speed excellent, not all the advanced options are there but 90% of the time I do not use them.

I use IE6 (SP1) 5% of the time, like when I really want the google search bar. Ideally I'd like to use IE all the time but the graphics are screwy.

I use Netscape 7.1 at other times, like when I feel like tabbed windows. But this program hasn't had the speed of IE for a long time and regularly messes up form layout. It cannot be my main browser as versions >4.7 are rejected by some servers I need to access.

To illustrate the difference in page display here is a screen grab (1920x1200 res) - approx 2.5Mb jpeg, but I wanted to keep the quality up to demonstrate what I mean... If you have a decent connection please check to see what I mean

The main difference here is the blocky graphics which IE (centre) 'enlarges' (thus distorting), eg curves on the MSN tabs, the groups embem etc. A major problem when text is presented in gifs. Netscape (right) has its own problems as you can see.

MSN explorer (left) is the perfect browser for me, but I do not wish to continue using it. Now that MSN have a subscription based browser interface (MSN 8 ) I doubt they will continue to support this browser... They stopped providing downloads of the UK version months ago. :(

So does anyone have any ideas how I can make IE behave so that I can make the switch? Thanks if anyone can help :D

I agree with Kev. Opera is the best!

I bin using 7.2 since last night, and its slower than IE for me. Took 2 minutes to dowload the pictures on gurus homepage, compared to IE which did it in bout 10 seconds. :(

Shame cos, as chris said, Opera is the best (older versions worked better for me) and its worth a try

i will try Opera but i imagine i will continue to be rejected by sites i need access to for non-IE browser.. But i'm not imagining this problem am I? The difference seems very visible to me.. I've been thru IE6 options menu changing image dithering etc, but to no avail... am sure it's gotta be such a simple solution but i can't work it out nor find any reference to it the MS 'knowledge base'... :(
