Big studios stop UMD production

Post by 117 »

Both Universal and Paramount have pulled out of the UMD business, along with Image. According to The Hollywood Reporter, both 20th Century Fox and Buena Vista Home Entertainment are also cutting back production of the PSP-only movie releases.

"No one's watching movies on PSP," said the president of one of the six major studios' home entertainment divisions. "It's a game player, period."

I was tempted to buy Ghostbusters on UMD. Then i just went to blockbuster and rented it.

UMD video was always gonna be a failure. It's only gonna ever work on one device so what is the point?

I dont really understand why anyone buys films on video or dvd either.
I only buy stuff on dvd which you cant get anywhere else. Formula 1 review or concert. Films or tv programmes you can hire or just watch on tv over and over again.

ed - apparently they're now doing a really good trade in Japan, Sony dropped the prices on them and made them more attractive, there's apparently now a massive market for them, and they're considering doing the same for the US/Euro market

arf - I have a great DVD collection, I love being able to watch any of the films I like whenever I like, without having to wait for the rental shop to be open or for it to come on tv (where you then have to contend with adverts and cuts), and as I always watch my dvds several times I make the money they cost originally back in what it would've cost me to rent them several tims. Plus the extras are often really good now :)
